What is the best way to remove old wallpaper in a house that is about 25 years old?

Scraping the wallpaper off will most likely damage any underlying plaster that has been weakened over time, so hiring a wallpaper stripper (using steam to heat up the paper so it flakes off easily) is probably the best way to go about removing it.

I think it depends what is under the wall paper. If the underlayment is drywall, then scoring the wallpaper with a Papertiger ( zinsser.com/product_detail.asp?ProductID=20 ) and then spraying on the enzyme like Dif ( zinsser.com/product_detail.asp?ProductID=18 ) and scraping it off is easiest. I did a 15 x 12 dining room that was papered in a hideous china red foil wallpaper (circa 1978) in a little over an hour a couple of weeks ago using this stuff.Be careful not to press the papertiger too hard.

Use only enough pressure to perforate the wallpaper. You don't want to damage the drywall underneath. I would also recommend getting a wallpaper scraper rather than just a drywall knife The scraper keeps the blade at an angle that makes gouging the wall almost impossible.

My mother was using a drywall knife and she accidentally gouged the wall in several places. Nothing major, but enough that some spackling was needed. Once the paper is off the wall, take a wallpaper sponge and wash down the walls to get off all the glue.

This may take a couple of attempts. Don't saturate the drywall, just lightly wipe with the damp, not wet sponge until all the glue is gone. The you're ready to prime and paint.

I used the steam method 30+ years ago when I lived in an old farm house. It did take off the 9 layers of wall paper and several coats of paint on the old horsehair plaster, but I don't know that you need that for wall paper that has only been installed in the last 25 years. These three tools (PaperTiger, wallpaper scraper and wallpaper sponge {big fat sturdy yellow sponge}) should cost you about $20 and another $10-20 for the remover gel depending on the size.

If you go to Lowes or Home Depot, these will be in the wallpaper/paint section.

Water spay it with water and wait two minutes and then start pealing it off.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
