MOst US publishing companies want ... manuscripts to be submitted in MS Word. As far as I know, there really isn't a character limit for Word--or if there is, you aren't going to be able to easily reach it. I've created manuscripts of 150,000 words--well over a million characters--books that were around 1000 pages in large formats when they came off press.

In general, publishers want your manuscript in a standard format with very little in the way of formatting, because when they run the text into a pagelayout program, they'd have to strip out the styling, anyway. When I turn a MS over to the publisher, I provide word documents for the title page, preface and table of contents, a separate file for each chapter, all in size 12 type, double spaced, with 1 inch margins on all side, and the title of the book, chapter and page numbers, and author names in the footers and headers. My co-author and I use end-notes rather than using the footnote system, as it can confuse page layout programs.

I have used several different word processing softwares but except for Microsoft Word they have all been mainframe programs and really clunky. I don’t even remember the names of most of them. So I am not an expert personally, but I was told by a computer instructor for a consulting firm, who is also a professional fiction writer, that Microsoft Word is the best software.

She had used them all and taught a lot of them. This was a few years ago, but I haven’t seen anything else arise since then. I remember that a lot of writers I knew loved WordStar and said it was the best, but they don’t make it anymore.

I write a lot in my profession, and since the time I started using a PC, I have always used Word. I find it easy to use and intuitive. This can change when you get really deep into things like metadocuments or automatic indexing.

I think there are some bugs that have not been fixed because so few people use those features that there aren’t that many complaints about them. But currently I am not using the latest version at work, so that may have improved in the most recent version. There are a huge number of features in Word that are seldom used.

I don’t think I know about all of them, but there are a lot of people I know who use Word who don’t know about features that I use all the time. I work with some of them and often become a tutor. As far as I know, the only limit to the length of a document, or number of characters, is imposed by the memory and storage on the computer you use.

You could probably fill up a complete hard drive with one Word document if you typed for a long, long time and never deleted anything. Stephen King could probably do it, but I couldn’t in a lifetime. But there may be a technical answer to that I don’t know about.

I love Word Perfect. In some ways one word processing program is very like another. WP, though, has a great feature called "Master Document.

" You can set the style for your entire manuscript, and then begin typing and saving each chapter...table of contents....glossary....bibliography. I like many of the other WP features I can't seem to do as easily on Microsoft Word as well. It's so much simpler to make tri-fold brochures, mailing address lists and other special documents I seem to need frequently. The only reason I don't use it all the time is that few people have WP these days.

It is difficult to e-mail WP documents to someone and expect they'll be able to open them. There are "convert" features on both WP and Word that let you convert documents from *. Wpd to *.

Doc formats, but that usually screws up any number of little things like margins, fonts and especially tables. Hardly worth the bother. So I continue to use WP for documents I'm reasonably sure I don't need to send to anyone by e-mail, and Word for those which I probably will have to mail out.

1 roseredcity, regarding your answer "I love Word Perfect. ": MS Word also does Master Documents. I don't know if it is better or worse at it than Word Perfect but I do know I have had problems with that feature when managing a document with input from a lot of different people.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
