At some point in the ancient history of man, the leaders within society realized they could solidify their control of the population by claiming their rule was by God's will. This allowed them to define what was and was not appropriate in society, because if they lead by God will then any decisions they made were ordained by God. So, any transgression against the moral authority of the leader was deemed sin.
Over the centuries, these became canonized as part of the religion as a whole and part of the social fabric. Sin is a means of imposing the will of the church and of the leaders the church supports.
