What is the difference between a hippie and a beatnik?

Beatniks existed in the 50s and 60s. The Beatniks are stereotyped as wearing turtlenecks, beards, bongos, berets, leotards and the like ppies existed in the 60s. The ppies are stereotyped as wearing tye-dye, hemp, barefooted, and the like ppies formed from Beatniks but both were counterculture movements.

Both were against societal norms of their times.
