What is the difference between amalgam (silver) fillings and composite (tooth colored) fillings?

Amalgam is a tried and tested material that is a strong material and will generally last longer than composite. Composite has the advantage of being tooth colored but is not as durable as amalgam. Composite also has a slightly higher cost than amalgam.
