Seems you're confusing conservatism with neo conservatism. But yea, whatever I guess. Conservatism has played a huge role in the development of philosophical ideals.
Much more than the inertia label that you're putting on the ideology in itself. The concept of the political theory of conservatism is simply to not let old, unbroken ideas die out. No, "liberals" aren't the only ones to come up with new ideas.
A "progressive" thinker does not, in any way have a monopoly on creative thought and new ideas. I'm sorry, but that's just a ridiculous perception. One would only have to look back at history to understand this.
This country being the best example. Let me explain. At a time where a strong central authority, strong legislative power, strong judicial power, high taxes, state sponsored programs in science and various other things were the establishment (largely progressive ideas in power), a few men stood against that.
They favored low taxes, weak government, strong "negative liberties" as our president put it, and complete and utter distaste for authority. They were men like Washington, Jefferson, Adams and the rest of the founding crew. Their ideas were not new ones for the most part.
In fact, most were about 2,000 years old. They, as well as the citizenry were inspired by a play "Cato, A Tragedy". The story of one of the greatest, UN-corruptible conservative politicians of all time and his opposition to the state, and a certain politician.
The politician he opposed would inevitably become known by his name, Cesar, leader of the newly reformed tyrannical Roman empire. Cato's opposition to this "new idea" led the way, and inspired countless Americans to take up arms against the greatest world power known to anyone at the time. It was these ideas that built the modern government model, and inspired nations like France and many, many, many more to stand up for themselves.
I don't want to be "equally progressive". I don't want to be progressive at all. I want to get out of the wars, I want to keep my taxes low (and when I pay taxes, I want to go to this society, not to build another).
I want privacy and private ownership rights, I want my constitutional rights. I do not want wealth to be distributed to me, or my wealth distributed to others. I want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, for my own interests.
You can keep your "progress". I've seen the result of that stuff far too much.
The cons in congress have come up with ideas, written bills and passed them...and the libs in the senate have tabled their ideas, because they are too stubborn to even allow an open discussion, let alone a vote. The cons have been attempting to return the federal government to the style the Constitution described, but the liberals have been STUBBORN and haven't continued to resist a consitutional federal government.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
