A milliard is the same value as a billion. The reason for the two names is that in the UK for example, one billion was equal to 10^12 - ie a million million), while a milliard was a thousand million. However, the consensus has been to adopt the US measure of one billion, making 10^12 a trillion and the milliard redundant.
