Dumb laws have been around as long as dumb people have. There are pages of dumb, odd, or crazy laws at dumblaws.com/. Since I live in Ohio, I decided to check for dumb laws in my state and found that it is illegal to fish for whales on Sunday, and it's illegal to get a fish drunk. In Akron, it's against the law to display colored chickens for sale.
In Cleveland it's illegal to catch mice without a hunting license. In McDonald, it's against the law to parade your duck down Ohio Street. And in my own part of the state, in Toledo, it's against the law to throw a snake at someone.
But what's even dumber is when a city official tries to enact a stupid law in order to get revenue for the city. This happened in June, 2009 in Toledo when the mayor at the time, Carty Finkbeiner, decided to issue parking tickets for $25.00 on vehicles that were parked on gravel. In the Toledo area, a great number of driveways or front yard parking is on gravel. Finkbeiner cited a 1991 city ordinance that prohibited parking on unpaved surfaces as the law being broken and would not rescind the fines.
It seems that a review of the laws should be conducted every so often to avoid those types of surprises. The citizens of Toledo were never warned and, because it did violate the law, they had to pay.
Through history there have been some extremely stupid laws placed on the books. Some of these laws were contrived by a bunch of power hungry men who wished to maintain their own warped sense of moral codes and ethics. Dumb laws can be found on several web sites and they've even made posters of them that kids used to hang on their walls.
I think that was a great idea. It would teach the kids that sometimes one must really think before they act on something otherwise it may become rule of law. Although many of these laws are no longer enforced, there is no reason why a police officer with a mean streak could not make a person go through all kinds of hoops to get out of the ridiculous charges.
For example, in North Dakota It is illegal to lie down and fall asleep with your shoes on. Well, I won't be visiting North Dakota any time soon! Another very odd law comes from Texas."When two trains meet each other at a railroad crossing, each shall come to a full stop, and neither shall proceed until the other has gone.
" Wonder how anything gets transported in that state? LOL. Don't try to keep your horse in a bathtub in South Carolina or you may be hit with a stiff fine.
If you live in New Jersey and it is fishing season don't get caught with knitting needles if you're a man! Learn a new language before going to Illinois! It is illegal to speak English there!
Stupid laws come from unthinking people who were sharp tongued and slick enough to convince others that they were good leaders. It takes the citizens to produce reasonable law makers, whether it be local, state, or federal. It is up to us all to do our homework and get the best people in charge so that they don't take advantage of their posts to push their own hidden or irrational agendas.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
