The first animated cartoon was called "Fantasmagorie. " It was made by a French director named Émile Cohl and was released in 1908.
The really first 'animated film' was created in 1832 already, using a "phenakistoscope disc". The disck had a series of pictures, which you could see moving by looking though gaps in the same disc. The images were reflected by a mirror, and then projected on a wall.In essence, this was the first 'short' animated film, which lasted only up to 30 images.
Basically, this device was a more sophisticated version of the well known 'flip book'. This amazing device was invented by Joseph Plateau in 1832.
