The gluteus maximus is an important muscle because it is a prime mover of the leg bone into extension (moving the leg backwards) or propelling the body forward as when walking or running. It also helps externally rotate (rotating the leg outward) as previously mentioned. It has another function, though, that's just as important, which is to keep the head of the femur from sliding forward (anterior femoral glide) in the hip socket.
