I'm the Y! A Wrestling Section's "anti-smark". I'm the one debunking a lot of the stupid things "smarks" post, thinking they know all the "secrets" because they hang out at spoiler/rumor sites.
I'm the one illustrating (constantly, *sigh*) that Vince McMahon did not invent pro wrestling, nor did he create anything he claims to have created, and I'm the one showing this section who DID. Yeah, I've become...grumpier...over the years I've been here, having to deal with "smarks" and the crap they post here (and all over the internet). I'd rather deal with a hundred "newbies" to pro wrestling and having to explain very basic concepts (of pro wrestling) to them than have to undo the damage one "smark" causes with his idiotic postings.
"Newbies" are laughed at and bashed by other fans; "smarks", bizarrely, actually get credibility because they purport to know "secrets" the rest of us don't know because they hang out at rasslinspoilers.com and believe what they read there. I can get just as "smarky" as anybody, not because I read spoiler/rumor sites (never have, never will) but because I pay attention, I've "seen it all", and I don't want some jaded negative internet critic ("smark") to make up my mind for me. I am a "smart mark".
A "mark" is a fan who watches a wrestling show to be entertained and doesn't care about "backstage stuff" or even how the business works. He/she suspends his/her disbelief and willingly participates in the charade without bitching about it or second-guessing the promoter/writers/performers. A "smart mark" is a "mark" who is also interested in the dynamics of how the show works, what doesn't work, and some of the business side of things (and that includes "backstage stuff" that affects the show, but not gossip {that's the domain of "smarks"}).
I am as "smart" to the wrestling business as anybody who doesn't actually work IN the business (there are "secrets" we don't know and never will) and I can discuss pro wrestling on any level. Arguing with know-it-all "smarks" (they don't discuss or debate) is the worst thing about being part of the IWC. I much prefer discussing things with other "smart marks" (who know the whole damn thing is fake but aren't defensive about it, on guard lest they think I think they are gullible and stupid, or try to put ME on the defensive about being a wrestling fan.
Jeez.) I also enjoy helping new fans to learn by explaining basic things about how things work (I get a good amount of emails from "newbies" asking basic questions, who get bashed HERE for asking them). The WWE is only one of many promotions I watch. The WWE is severely lacking in providing a "real" and believable wrestling show, but they also offer things other promotions don't.
No one promotion gives me everything I want in a wrestling show (though AAA comes pretty damn close). I enjoy all styles of pro wrestling (especially the lucha flavor) even though the overly-done punch & kick brawler (that is so prevalent in the WWE) is boring and a lazy way to present a "wrestling match"; anybody can punch and kick but only a comparative few can wrestle. I've never been a "casual" fan.
I was hooked and addicted from my very first show (thank you, Freddie Blassie!). I've never been a "smark" and I never will be. I can argue with them on their level, but it's tedious and not any fun.
I am a "smart mark". Always will be.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
