What is the link between HIV and other sexually transmitted infections?

Infection with any STI makes us much more vulnerable to HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, if we are exposed to it. The other infection may cause skin cracks, sores, or lesions in the same body parts that can be exposed to HIV�such as the vagina�making it easier for HIV to get into our bloodstream. HIV targets white blood cells, which are supposed to fight infection, so having an STI mobilizes more white blood cells for HIV to infect.

Finally, the same risky behaviors that expose us to one infection can expose us to others, and a partner with one STI may have others.
