Besides the competitive aspect of people, who get a charge out of being ahead of others in whatever measure, Mahalo does pay for widget views. If I'm not mistaken it's M$1 per 1000 views. Thus, the user in question may have just racked up thousands of M$s.
That's another form of competition, but a more lucrative one.
With having more points, you gain more possibilities on Mahalo. You can rate more answers, complete higher level tasks, claim more tasks, etc. Next to that, there is always the 'competitive edge', and some people just want to show off their enormous amounts of points to others, in a 'mine is bigger than yours' kinda competition. Some people think they can have a better life by having more and more points, whatever way they earned them, not realizing that at Mahalo, points are just one thing to be had, while 'reputation' comes from being involved, providing high quality questions/answers, having great managed pages, etc. People know each other, and won't recognize someone just from his/her points level or belt.
Beyond that, for some it is just enough that 'it's possible, so I'll do it'... Whether they benefit form from it or not.
I try to think of more benefits of getting a higher point (thus higher belt) account: 1. 1000 views will give 1 Mahalo dollar 2. More priviledges and can manage more pages, do more tasks, answer more questions etc… 3.
Future possible perks for higher belt, for e.g. Profit sharing on activities 4. If high belt has good perks and there are peoples who want it, generate high belt accounts and then sell it.(Wow!) I invent a word “belt/point farming :-) 5.
Black belt may be a good credential in some career fields.
Besides what everyone has already said, I believe many more features are on the way for belts that are higher up.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
