What is the primary difference between Great Britain and the United Kingdom?

The United Kingdom is a state that consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The official name of the country is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Great Britain is the name of the island northwest of France and east of Ireland that consists of England, Wales and Scotland. Politically, Great Britain also refers to England, Scotland and Wales in combination, and therefore also includes a number of outlying islands such as the Isle of Wight, Anglesey, the Isles of Scilly, the Hebrides, and the island groups of Orkney and Shetland.
