Princess Diaries' author Meg Cabot nterview by Zach DunkinAfter a nine-year reign and 15 million copies sold worldwide, Meg Cabot’s Princess Diaries series is coming to its royal fairy-tale finish. In the recently released “Forever Princess,” the 10th and final installment, Princess Mia Thermopolis graduates from Albert Einstein gh School and leaves Hoosier author Cabot a bittersweet void in her prolific writing career. “It’s sad, but I really hadn’t had plans for her to go past high school,” said Cabot, who turned 42 on Feb.1.

“It’s kind of weird. I’ve been writing about her for so long, and I still have all of these Princess Mia ideas that I want to write about, but I don’t have a book contract for her. ”Nine Princess Diary books spent 144 weeks on the New York Times best-seller lists and generated a pair of Disney films, “The Princess Diaries” (2001) and “The Princess Diaries II: Royal Engagement” (2004).

Not bad for a series that began with “17 or 18” rejections. Cabot was born in Bloomington and grew up in the Elm Heights area, just south of the Indiana University campus. She spent six years as a student on that same campus, pursuing a degree in fine arts because Benjamin Egnatz (her future husband, who studied English at IU) discouraged her from majoring in creative writing.

“He said if I studied creative writing it would make me hate it, because if you do it too much, it would take all the fun out of it. I was so freaked out. ”Twenty-five years later, Cabot has published more than 50 books, mostly for teens.

She’s also a chick-lit writer for adults, enjoying success with “Queen of Babble,” among others. On the same day that HarperTeen released “Forever Princess,” Cabot’s adult publisher, Avon A, also released an adult romance novel, “Ransom My Heart,” published with Princess Mia Thermopolis (aka Cabot) as its author. These days, Ben (a former financial writer who’s now a gourmet chef) and Meg split their time between New York, Key West, Fla.

, and Bloomington, where they are restoring a barn residence. Sources: http://m.indy.com/forums/books-magazines/thread/q-a-princess-diaries-author-meg-cabot .
