What is the significance of the name of the movie King Creole? Why "creole"?

Creole is one of the two dominant cultures of New Orleans, where the movie is set. The other is the more famous Cajun. The "King" may be a reference to Elvis Presley's title, or to the involvment of the mafia in the movie's plot, or possibly just sounded good and went with the movie's film noir style.
