What is the smallest device with a colour screen and wifi that can run Linux, so that I can hack it?

Or are you looking for cheap linux wifi with video screen. I don't think a used android phone is going to be that much more then a development system like beagle board. I mean the board is 149 and then you need a screen and memory.

In fact from what i've read about beagle board, looks like a lot of people are running different versions of android on it. Plus then you need a video out ($29 for VGA) Best to get a used phone with linux and wifi. Here is a great site with a list of linux based cell phones.

I'm experimenting with gumstix. They're, as the name implies, the size of a stick of gum and have various "daughter boards" that you can add on, including wifi, touchscreen, etc. They run embedded linux or I think some windows variant. Beagleboard's is also good, but much bigger.

That depends on what you call linux, do you mean the linux core or a (full blown) linux distro, and then you can even chose if is has to be a dedicated distro or not. You can even put linux on an ipod nano. But then you have podzilla, you can't expect it to run ubuntu.

If you need wifi you could try a linux distro on an ipod touch. But still, is that what you want? Or do you need a sort of desktop distro. In that case you could try a verry small netbook.

There are enough things out there on which you can put linux, the question is what you need. And for that a little more info would be nice. Things like: run on batteries?

The use of it,.... could help a lot. You can't use something with a 200mhz processor to render a car in HD, but it would be stupid to use a 2GHz processor device for controlling your audio over wifi..

I still have my openmoko freerunner, I ran debian and gentoo on it and I got to say, I still play with it sometimes :) It has wifi, bluetooth, gps and of course call ands sms functions. I can even connect my 500gb usb HDD to it to play movies through mplayer:) (of course the screen is little but hey I don't care) Checkout: wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Neo_FreeRunner for more info. They are maybe a little expensive, but as I see it it's worth it's money.

If you want to buy some checkout: handheld-linux.com/wiki.php?page=Neo%20F....

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
