Microsoft often will release hotfix upgrades for their operating systems such as Windows XP to address newly discovered critical security issues. Issues are normally addressed in service packs, but hot fixes are much smaller upgrades released between service packs as the need arises for them.
I have the same thing: a whole list of windows xp hotfixes on my add/remove program list. I have downloaded the service pack 2 and installed it, and my computer wouldn't boot up. It finally did in safe mode, but I finally realized that I had to uninstall sp-2 to get it working again.
