Marijuana is worse on two levels. Marijuana is both mentally debilitating (okay, my youngest daughter and oldest daughter smoke, got that from both their parents but can drive), and more carcinogenic than tobacco. Your standard tobacco has the tar; marijuana has more than forty carcinogens (what George Harrison and Bob Denver died from.) How is your teenage daughter even getting either one?

From a health perspective, certainly smoking marijuana is safer and healthier, although putting the byproducts of combustion into your lungs is never safe or healthy. The chances of getting addicted to a lifelong habit is a lot less on marijuana. Unfortunately, for people that try marijuana and have the genetic codeset for an addictive personality, it is a gateway drug to drugs such as crystal meth whch are addictive and can cave serious health implications, including death.
HOWEVER, from a legal aspect, smoking cigarettes is legal, and won’t lead to lengthy prison sentences and the confiscation of assets. The best bet? Don’t allow or encourage them to smoke at all.
Maybe it’s time to be a parent and tell her than until she turns 18, she isn’t allowed to do either. Perhaps you should have her volunteer at a hospital on the unit that handles COPD related to smoking so she can see what her future holds.
