What kind of anesthesia is used during rhinoplasty surgery?

Rhinoplasty surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. Most anesthesiologists believe this is safer for the patient, since the airway is well protected by the breathing tube. Even though gauze packing is placed during surgery to prevent any blood from dripping down the throat, some does get through.

If local anesthesia and heavy sedation are used, the gag reflex is decreased and there is a chance that the patient could breathe in (aspirate) blood. With general anesthesia, this is less likely.
