Jute ( White jute, Corchorus capsularis and Tossa jute, Corchorus olitorius) need a plain alluvial soil and standing water. It prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils and can even grow in very alkaline soil. It cannot grow in the shade.
It requires moist soil: 5–8 cm of rainfall weekly with extra needed during the sowing period. The suitable climate for growing jute (warm and wet climate) is offered by the monsoon climate during the monsoon season. Temperatures ranging 20˚ C to 40˚ C and relative humidity of 70%–80% are favourable for successful cultivation.
