The FMCSA may allow unsatisfactory-rated motor carriers that do not transport passengers or hazardous materials to operate for an additional 60 days. The agency may do this if it determines the motor carrier is making a good faith effort to improve its safety fitness. The FMCSA may make the determination at the end of the initial 60-day period or any extensions of that period.

The total period cannot exceed 120 days.
