Limelight, a Charlie Chaplin film, was released in 1952. At the time, it was shown only in few East Coast theaters, and thus not eligible for an Academy Award. Chaplin's murky immigration status as well as his alleged Communist leanings led nearly all US theaters to boycott the film.
It was not until late 1972 that Limelight played in a theater in Los Angeles County, an eligibility requirement for an Oscar nomination. Chaplin and collaborators Raymond Rasch and Terry Russell won the award for Best Dramatic Score. This was the film's only nomination.
