Roh Moo Hyun (6 August 1946 - 23 May 2009) was the 16th President of South Korea, a position he held from 25 February 2003 to 25 February 2008. He was in the Uri Party during this time, and before that was a member of the Millennium Democratic Party (1997-2003), the Democratic Party (1990-1997) and the Unified Democratic Party (1988-1990). Roh entered politics in 1998 when he was elected a member of the National Assembly representing Dong-gu, Busan, and soon gained a reputation as a "clean" politician after campaigining against corruption in politics in South Korea.

He ran for re-election in 1992 again for the seat of Dong-gu, but was defeated. He returned to office in 1998, when Lee Myung-bak resigned his seat because of a violation of election law, winning in the ensuing by-election. In 2000, Roh was appointed as the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, and this position would constitute his only real government experience prior to the presidency.
