The most important quality in a true friend is that they appreciate who you are as a person. I have had many close friends in my lifetime. There are several qualities that define what a close or best friend encompasses as a person.
I will list some of the qualities I feel many of my very closest friends have possessed throughout my lifetime. 1) They accepted me without judgment or criticism and loved me for who I was as a person. 2) They were not jealous of me and if they were, they told me to my face and not behind my back.3) They would never dream of exposing a personal detail or secret that I asked them to keep confidential.4) They supported me when I was right and lovingly told me when they thought I might be wrong.5) They let me talk because I love to talk and never pointed out that I talk too much, even though we both knewthat I did.6) They were always eager to see me and spend time with me.7) They worried with me when something was bothering me and always offered great suggestions.8) They helped me figure out things if something was bothering me without me feeling that I was burdening them with something stupid or trivial.
I tend to be dramatic for some reason.9) We enjoyed our times together and we could be anywhere at the time.10) They never held grudges or took anything I said personally because they knew I had their best interests in mind at all times. I hope this answers your question as to what qualities I feel a best friend should possess in life. Best Wishes!

Defining one true friend When I was a kid, I had many interests. I loved baseball. I loved ping pong and tennis.
I was a good student. I liked outdoors, hiking and shooting rifles. I liked to play chess.
Church friends. I liked imagination games, especially when I was younger. No one would do all those things with me.So I had different friends.
I had my baseball friends. My ping pong friends. My school friends - etc. And this taught me the importance of not being exclusive. I learned to associate and relate to many people at many levels.
We would talk about various things and just enjoy life. As I got older, I learned and appreciated the value of having friends who were trustworthy. I could share problems and discuss issues that were bugging me.So I discovered I had two levels of friends - people I could hang with who had no expectations and people who were doers.
Those crossed sometime - but rarely. Then I got married. I found my one true friend.
A friend I could share life with who I could trust and share my dark side, my light side and would love me anyway. It took years to develop this trust, but over time we did accomplish it. I have experienced some very dear friendships since - but none as intimate (mentally) as my wife.
I have never counted them, but I would guess there are 5-6 very close friends - who would do anything to help me and vice versa. We can talk about anything and expect to have a fair and open hearing. People I trust with most anything.
Then another group I really enjoy being with, but where the intimacy level is significantly lower. All to say, a best friend is a special gift. One that should obviously be cherished, respected and protected - and nurtured.
But there is only so much time in a day. So it is hard to maintain too many. And if you are fortunate enough to marry wisely - then that person will take up most of the time.
But a good friend will realize and respect that - and be there on whatever basis - if they are true friend. Hope this helps .
Friends My best friend died a long time ago, and I still think of her often. My other friends and I are close, but I don't see them as my best fried. I think the older I get I don't call anyone best friend like in my younger days.
I've been through some ugly friends, but after a while you just pick and choose. My friends are caring, supportive, and trustworthy. We can laugh and joke with one another without taking offense.
