He worked his way into radio in 1953, producing a late night interview show before receiving his own nightly program on WMCA/New York. In 1958, Kaufman joined WINS/New York as the host of the Swingin’ Soiree, a mixture of rock and roll and Kaufman’s inventive patter.
When he took over Alan Freed’s timeslot a year later, Kaufman quickly became the most popular disc jockey in New York. Kaufman’s love for rock and roll and its audience led the Beatles to seek him out when they first came to America in 1964. Kaufman’s friendship with the group earned him the nickname “The Fifth Beatle.
”When WINS switched to an all-news format in 1965, Kaufman moved to WOR-FM/New York, where he pioneered the progressive rock format before the station switched formats a year later. Bothered by the constrictions of Top 40 Radio, Kaufman joined NBC’s Monitor from 1969 to 1971. Eventually he left New York for California to host the syndicated Soundtrack of the '60s, but a battle with cancer forced him to step aside after a year.

Wow, that's a name I haven't heard in a while! Believe it or not, Murray Kauffman has a website (I listed it below) that does a terrific job talking about his career and has all sorts of multimedia. Looks like the stations were WMCA, WMGM and WINS.
(the site notes he followed Alan Freed in the rotation there and later Cousin Brucie, when Freed was drummed out of radio -- how's that for 3 pioneers? ). Wikipedia does a better job with his latter career.
The self-proclaimed Fifth Beatle (and how do you think John Lennon reacted to that, to say nothing of Pete Best? ), actually was off WINS by the time The Beatles had been in America for less than of year. He then showed up as the big dog on WOR-FM.
He left NY radio after a heart attack and worked at CHUM in Toronto and WHFS in Washington (which was the equivalent of New York's free-form WFUV up until 3 years or so ago). He returned to New York, where he worked on NBC Monitor and then joined Wolfman Jack on WNBC, just as they were cranking up the Don Imus era. He finished New York radio on WKTU.
So, in order: WMCA (AM) WMGM (AM) WINS (AM) - obviously before it went to be the famous news station. WOR-FM CHUM (Toronto, Canada) WHFS (Washington, D.C.) NBC Monitor WNBC Hope that helps. Thanks for bringing back some memories.
BTW, the Murray the K site is selling copies of his interviews with The Beatles. I just may buy one. That's a little disappointing. Oh well, what's done is done. What exactly were you looking for just out of idle curiosity since your question was answered with tons of detail?

3 Ah, that explains it. I knew there was something. When the rating assignments go awry when your question's time is up, each answer gets assigned an "okay" rating.
No worries, glad you got the answer. I just didn't want to see a trend from others where folks would research and then receive an "Okay" instead of a "Good" or, heaven forbid, "Great" rating. So did you buy any of his old stuff for sale?
;-) .
