Adam Gadahn, the US-born Al Qaeda member who encouraged Muslims to attack his home country, could be sentenced with the death penalty if found guilty, since TREASON is a capital punishment. Since he is a U.S. citizen, the best legal route for him is to face trial as a citizen committing treason and punished according to America justice system. I think his offenses is very grave, because he was the latest US citizen to be charged with TREASON in the last 50 years.
The only consequence of his action is probably the Death Penalty, under current laws.

Asking Muslim Americans to rise against the country and to call a hero Maj.

He is responsible for his words and actions and what they have created as action within any conspiracy against the United States and should be held accountable to the maximum extent.
Just sentence the man to death, shoot him, and be done with it. Although a part of us that seeks revenge want him to suffer as long as possible, it will create more problems in the long run. If he's imprisoned, either in maximum security prison or in hard labor prison, someone would bound to try to rescue him or he'll try to escape.
Either way, succesful or not, their attempts endangering the guards and create huge problems, especially if they kidnap people and hold them in ransom for his release.
