A Manhattan cocktail is made with whiskey and vermouth, while a Martini cocktail is made with gin and vermouth. There are many non-traditional modern versions which blur this basic distinction; but, that is what the real difference is.
The original Dry Martini is made with Dry Gin and Dry Vermouth and served usually with green olives. The Manhattan Cocktail (dry) calls for 1 Dash of Bitters, 3/4 ounces Dry Vermouth and 1 1/2 ounces of whiskey (bourbon or Canadian blended). Dry is usually served with an olive and sweet is served with a cherry.
For a sweet Manhattan, replace the Dry Vermouth with Sweet Vermouth.
