What was heroduts' religous/political/social affiliation?

While extraordinarily difficult to ascertain the driving forces of someone who died 2,500 years ago, it's probably safe to say that Herodotus worshipped the Greek pantheon of gods, given the time and place he was born. However, he did have quite the fascination with Egypt and its religion and considered them to be the most religious of the peoples he'd encountered. As for socio-political affiliations, while he most certainly exhibited some Athenian bias, it was significantly less than that of his contemporaries.

You can see this when he doesn't immediately demonize the Persians in his writings, whom the Greeks were clashing with at the time.

Herodotus was an Ancient Greek Pagan. Although his stories are mainly secular, the Gods and Goddesses from time to time are credited from time to time with decisive influence over the course of battles and kingly acts. He also firmly believed, and clearly assumes is widely believed, that it was absurd to ridicule or ignore foreign customs and religions in their home countries.

He understood and appreciated the Ancient Egyptian religion. On the other hand, it is not clear that he understood the Persian religion Zoroastrianism, which does not have a pantheon of Gods but only two. He recognizes those two, but not that the Persians believed that there were only two.

Herodotus is thought to have been of aristocratic birth, for he was taught to read and write. He traveled widely, lectured, and wrote but was not a trader, craftsman, or laborer. He does not seem to have been active in politics except for being involved in the founding of a Greek colony city in Sicily.

He could be considered to have been a Greek patriot who viewed the quarrels between the Greek cities as matters of their rulers but less important than the defense against foreign threats.
