The official date for the beginning of Operation Enduring Freedom is Octover 7, 2001. The US, operating on evidence that Al Quaeda, headed by Osama bin Laden, was responsible for the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01, noted that the Taliban regime of Afghanistan was giving that group safe harbor, and asked them to deliver AQ into US hands. When the Taliban refused to do so, the US commenced Operation Enduring Freedom and toppled the Taliban, although it's resurgent in some areas of that nation today. In addition, while Al Quaeda has been croippled over the years, it hasn't been destroyed, and Osama bin Laden is still at large.
