What was unique about colonial New Jersey?

It was the first to ratify the bill of rights.

Between 1600 and 1800, there was an influx of men and women to the United States from various parts of Europe and Latin America. These settlers built different colonial houses… containing styles that were reflective of the architecture from the settler's homelands. Houses built by these settlers contain common themes that are still used in modern homes today. There are also several original Colonial homes that have been preserved and restored.

Common Colonial house styles include New England Colonial, German Colonial, Spanish Colonial, Dutch Colonial, and French Colonial. New England Colonial homes were first built by British settlers between the 1600s and 1740. The original homes were made from wood, and few of these exist today.

But there are modern versions of these homes as well as homes that incorporate several other styles with New England Colonial. New England homes, whether original or modern built, are usually located in the northeastern part of the U.S. in Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and New York. The homes have steep roofs with side gables, a lean-to addition with saltbox roof, and narrow eaves.

A large chimney sits at the center of the home.
