What were the circumstances surrounding The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin leaving the WWE?

The Rock turned down the offer of a new contract and let it run down at the end of 2004. He had previously said in interviews that after the success of The Scorpion King that he wanted to focus on movie career. He felt that he had achieved all he could with WWE and figured the time was right to quit while he was still fit and uninjured.
