What were the historical events leading up to World War II? Could the war have been averted? How?

World Wat I was the major event. People think if we got rid of there may have been no war. But even tler had supporters and they may have fond someone else to "front" for them.

Perhaps that might have been a smarter person who would have won the war for Germany.

I meant World War I. World Wat is not a subject I care to comment on.

If you want the history - there is plenty of it and much was about Napoleon. But if you study a map and look at the "contested areas" you will know as much as anyone alive. Alsace-Lorraine org/wiki/Alsace-Lorraine.

If the Versailles treaty had been less vindictive. "The Treaty of Versailles was received very badly within Germany. The nation had been blamed entirely for the first world war and had been forced to pay compensation to the allies under the war guilt clause of the treaty.

http://american_almanac. Tripod.com/warguilt.htm The war guilt clause not only made the Germans accept responsibility for the war but also cost them dearly. 10% of German lands were lost as a result, all of Germany's overseas colonies were taken away and shared between the allies and a massive 12.5% of the German population found itself living outside of the new German borders.

These terms had several very dramatic consequences on Germany. * Initially they refused to sign the treaty and opted to scuttle the fleet in protest. The economy was ruined as much of the produce and profit had to be sent to the allies as reparations payments.

This meant that the German economy was unable to recover itself. http://www.schoolshistory.org.uk/germanyversailles.htm htm.

War debt was a primary factor for impoverishing Germany. Why do we accept large amounts of debt during peacetime and think we can escape poverty? GoldenLion 16 months ago .

Book : Wealth, War, and WisdomHyperinflation creates social disorder and disillusionment. Hyperinflation is characterized by riots for food, high unemployment, and the shutdown of hospitals, institutions, and businesses. People start to demand order and price stability allow for new regimes of power to take control.

For example, Schact created a new Reich mark backed by gold. The asset stabilized the hyperinflated mark and money supply became more credible. By 1929, the Germany equity market had declined 74%.

Schacht started to print money, manipulate currency valuations, and force individual savings. From 1932-36 unemployment dropped from 6 million to 1 million and from 32-37 industrial-production rose 102%, mostly in military equipment output to rearm the German Army, WWI was inevitable. Based on the findings in this book, Post WWI military production reduced the affects of German hyperinflation.

Was war inevitable or could it have been averted? Could Germany have divert country resources into exports to the US and built up their economy through peaceful means? GoldenLion 16 months ago .

Germany was impoverished by two things, the war debts noted in the Treaty of Versailles and the depression. The depression was not limited to the United States. It was a worldwide depression.

The US dept was a war dept begun under the Bush administration. A the same time, the deregulation of Wall ST. And corporations = regulations that had been put in place by FDR to try to save the country from a future depression, drove this country into near economic failure.

Bush began pumping money into wall street and Obama focused on industry to protect jobs - it would be a lot worse today if we'd allowed our largest industry to fail and then Fox would be using terms like Obamavilles to identy the shanty towns that would again fill our open spaces. I sincerely don't know what else the man could have done. He inherited a horrendous fiscal mess and did not say he had all the answers, he said he would try.

Nobody has all the answers and quite frankly, if McCain had won, he'd have done the exact same thing and been praised for it. This is a mess caused by greed AND unnecessary war.

I think the depression of the 1930s also fueled .

We had a similar debate on this subject about 18 months ago, so I won't repeat myself too much but....- For those who consider the Versailles Treaty vindictive, it is worth comparing the terms to those imposed on France by Germany in 1870 (which is where the concept of war guilt and reparations originated) and those imposed by Germany on Russia at Brest-Litovsk in 1918;- Actual reparations paid were in the order of $250 million up to 1924 when they were re-negotiated under the Dawes Plan and effectively ceased altogether; The Nazis and other Pan German nationalists made great play out of the alleged injustice of Versailles but as ever the reality was somewhat different. Their propaganda was so effective that it is still being quoted in forum like these 70 years later. A greater cause of bitterness was the loss of German speaking areas in Poland and Czechoslovakia under the nationalist doctrine formulated by Woodrow Wilson and the loss of their military forces.

1) Collapse of the world economy thanks to over-eager stock markets with no regulatory oversight. 2) Germany's overweening pride and sense of self-importance.3) France insisting that Germany pay for its invasion of France exactly as Germany insisted France pay for its invasion of Germany 48 years earlier. Shamed Germans decided this tler buffoon didn't look so stupid, now.

Averting war would have required changing the mind of the German populace. Remember, Adolf tler didn't operate in a vacuum; what he said was what millions of Germans WANTED to hear. Change 20,000,000 minds before the new Chancellor elections in 1933 or go to war.
