I lived just outside Lisboa for a summer...many years ago. I cannot point you to current tourist sights or to any establishments with any reliability. You'll get that from others.
BUT, I can direct you to an experience you will remember for the rest of your life. Picture yourself in a small dark nightclub one evening, filled with small tables and packed with Portuguese as well as some tourists. The place is alive with excitement and a cacaphony of conversations. In the old days, the place would be smoke-filled (OK, that was the bad part...it'll take you 2 days to air out your clothes).
Harried waitresses take your drink orders. All of a sudden, the lights go from dim to black. A piercing spotlight cuts through the darkness and embraces a woman (or sometimes a man) standing by a microphone.
In the background you begin to hear the delicate, steel-stringed notes from old instruments--conjuring up medieval Spanish and Moorish melodies. And, then the singer begins her throaty impassioned song which, whether you understand the language or not, you understand with perfect clarity. This is Fado.
It is the folk music of Portugal. It means fate. You will not forget this evening.
Amalia Rodrigues was perhaps the queen of Fado. You will no doubt experience the passion of another, younger artist. But, listen to the music and you will be transported to another place: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJ-ugf0_YPg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoivTZUh_OI (this 2nd link was recorded in Paris; don't be fooled by the French announcer) Clubs come and go.
I recommend you seek the advice of a concierge at a top Lisbon hotel or the advice of locals whom you befriend. Fado is folk music--the foundational music of a culture. It is not contemporary Portuguese popular music, which is probably very similar worldwide. It may be performed these days in only a few venues, some probably very touristy.
Today, there are modern fado stars like Mariza. I guess I am an old timer and prefer the classical guitars and other stringed instruments. If you travel in Portugal, outside Lisboa, you will find that there are different Fado traditions.
Coimbra is a place where you can experience another beautiful variation. We were taken by our hosts. I was a mere boy.
But, I will never forget that experience as long as I live. I am a former linguist. I have studied and heard many languages.
Portuguese (which differs in pronunciation from Brazilian) is the most beautiful language on earth to me. Have a glorious trip. Leave it in Lisbon hi travelkat, we've been to Lisbon twice. The things we enjoyed the most were the castle at the top of the city and a taxi trip to the nearby village of SINTRA up in the mountains. I would suggest that you reserve a half day for your visit.
Its better to go in the morning, so you can avoid siestas in the PM when everything shuts down. The food in Portugal is excellent and you will find a lot of Moorish influence there. I enjoyed the tilework.
I also suggest that you learn a little Portuguese (Rosetta Stone CD) and do not wear anything patriotic. Enjoy... Sources: World Travelors Google Map View Larger Map .
1 Walking on the wide streets. Walking in general. Read a good history before you go; so much of Portugal today is a result of the dictatorships and changes that took place since.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
