I would fall back on the old stand-by... Take a handsome basket, in the size that most closely relates to how generour you're feeling. Line it with an attractive tea-towel to two, or with some bright cloth napkins (in multiples of 4). Then fill the basket with kitchen-stuff.

Wooden spoons. Pot-holders. Gadgets.

Napkin rings. Coasters. Candles.

I generally go to the dollar store and find a bunch of things that I know I use often, and that I know don't last forever. Scrub brushes, vegetable peelers, slotted spoons... I like this technique because you can go small/medium or large with it, and you can spend as much or as little on it as you like. Or you can fall back on another old stand-by, and get a bottle of wine.

Or put the bottle of wine in a basket, lined with a tea-towel, and include a cork-screw, a couple of those "open bottle" replacement corks, some of those decorative little "identification" wineglass rings, and some cocktail napkins and coasters. At any rate, you get the idea. You could theme it to baking, or chinese food, or south-western, or what-you-will.

Hammer, nails, screwdrivers, plyers, etc. Someone will always buy a "trinket" gift. But they will appreciate this stuff. Put it in a nice basket and arrange the items tastefully, then tie it with a bow.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
