I just bought another revolver in 41 Magnum and loaded some 265 grain WNFBGC bullets over a healthy dose of Lil Gun for the upcoming deer season. I personally keep my handgun and bow hunting down to about 40 yard shots. That's about as good a shot as I am (obviously not very!).
More sporting? Not really, just different. And in my part of the country I think the longest rifle shot I've made in the last quarter century was still under 250 yards.
Part of that is simply that I enjoy hunt "Get in as close as you kin, laddie, and then get ten yards closer.
A lot of factors go into determining what, for you, should be your maximum range with any firearm. Shooting skill is foremost, accuracy and ballistic performance of your firearm/ammunition is a major consideration, the conditions (Windy? Heavily wooded?
On unsteady footing? Moving target?) also contribute heavily. I primarily hunt with a 30-06 bolt action and my .300 blackout AR-15.
The 30-06 is plenty accurate to 300 yards, but I'm only accurate to 200 yards with it, so that's my limit. The .300 blackout drops off pretty quickly after 100 yards, so I try to keep it under that. I have a scoped .357 that I have not yet used for hunting.
I've zeroed it at 50 yards, and that's the distance I plan to take my shots. It's a pretty reasonable distance, given my hunting setup. Do not think that shooting from longer distances is "more sporting."
People who think that shorter shots are too easy are ignoring the purpose of hunting: to harvest food. By turning it into a game of skill where something needs to be proved, you introduce a good likelihood that you're going to wound or maim game animals, which will suffer and die slowly of infection or a number of other things. That isn't "sporting," it's unethical.
Shoot what you know you can kill. If it's too easy by somebody else's standards, ask them how difficult it is when they go to McDonald's.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
