It's not that simple of a question. How well did you know this individual and how long did you work with him? The less well you knew him and the shorter the length of time you were acquainted make it less "necessary" that you attend.
There is no "rule" that you must attend the memorial service of any person whoever was in your life; if we did, some people would be attending funerals, wakes, etc. every day of their life. You have to do what is in your heart.
I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
