What's the difference between thumbnails and previews in Aperture?

There are two main image types that could be easily confused by the uninitiated whilst working in Aperture. The first type, are known as thumbnails. These are 1024 pixel views of your photos, that can’t be manipulated and are just for browsing.

This is essential for the quick viewing of images. Aperture being a smart application provides an instant access link to the high-resolution image when you click on the thumbnail. Previews are rendered JPEG files that can be exported outside Aperture into another application such as Adobe Photoshop.

A JPEG is a compressed high-resolution file that is good for storing and distributing image files. JPEG is an acronym, that stands for joint photographic experts group. JPEG images are the most common file format used to store images used by digital cameras.

They are also the most popular form of image used for distribution on the World Wide Web.
