Vietnamese usually take astrology, horoscopes, superstitions and just plain luck quite seriously. It may mean absolutely nothing to you, but it will mean everything to them. I'm much like you with my opinions about these things, but I don't dare challenge their beliefs and I would be very careful with chuckling about the subject around your girlfriend.

You can end up getting cursed with bad luck and suddenly end up a believer. On one of my trips, I brought home a wood Buddha statue from Vietnam that was "blessed" by a monk for a friend of mine. I made a quick prayer every time I moved the statue out of respect to whomever or whatever.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
