Honestly, you do sound really out of touch. The reason why it was practically an insult to call someone gay back in the day was that it was SO frowned upon. Calling someone gay who wasn't gay was used specifically to tarnish their reputation.
And calling someone gay who was gay was highlighting something about them that was considered socially inappropriate. But since the movement of 'coming out' and being proud to be gay gained momentum after the 1960s, it is now considered a slap in the face to the lgbt community to try to conceal being gay. Trailblazers who came out when it was MUCH more difficult have made it easier for everyone else today.
I still get pretty sad when my parents insist on calling my girlfriend my 'partner'. I get that they don't mean anything wrong by it, but she IS my girlfriend. And it would be nice if they could see that, and considered the love we shared to be just as valid as it is between a straight couple.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
