The first World Series of Poker, in 1970, was not actually a tournament, as we think of them these days. The first WSOP was an invitational event where the players voted on who played the best (Johnny Moss). This followed the first similiar event called the Texas Gambling Reunion in Reno in 1969.

Starting in 1971, Binions introduced the freeze out style that is still followed today.

The World Series of Poker began in 1970 and paved the way to modern tournament to become popular in American casinos. The champions during the tournament were Johnny Moss, Amarillo Slim, Bobby Baldwin, Doyle Brunson, and Pugge Pearson.
