When did the term foodie get coined?

Paul Levy and Ann Barr coined the term foodie in 1981 with the release of their book, “The Official Foodie Handbook. €? Foodies are not considered gourmets, rather, they are just average people who enjoy the muti-aspects of food from its preparation, presentation and science to its consumption.

Foodies enjoy conversation about renowned chefs, styles of cooking, food news, techniques, and of course flavors. With the establishment of the Food Network and the Cooking Channel, becoming a foodie has become more and more popular. Shows, such as, Iron Chef, Cook Like An Iron Chef, Ace of Cakes, Top Chef, Network Challenge, Rachel Ray and Paula Dean have made cooking, eating and watching cooking shows fun, entertaining and educational and have spawned a large network of cooking websites, such as allrecipes.com.
