I usually start stringing a few lights about the end of October and we really get started just before Thanksgiving. Most of the stuff that is noticeable from the road doesn’t go up until just before Thanksgiving and we turn the lights on Thanksgiving Night. We usually take everything down that we can on New Years Day.

The Day after Thanksgiving usually We decorate our tree either the day after Thanksgiving or the weekend. It seems to take a really long time, at least 3 to 4 hours to put the tree up and decorate it, starting with dragging everything down from the Attic. The lights drive me bonkers so my hubby does those and I just do something else until they are on the tree.
My job is to put the ornaments on because I like to put certain ornaments in certain places. We put Christmas music on and sing and dance while we are decorating. The day after Christmas or the weekend after Christmas, we take it all down in about an hour or less.
At that point, I am tired of looking at it and the cats have pulled off most of the ornaments at the bottom of the tree for the 20th time. LOL Hubby takes the lights off so that he can do them just right. We both do the rest.

Thanksgiving Weekend Supposing I'm home to do so. It's a nice long weekend in which to sort out what I want to put up. Things may not go up that weekend, but they're at least hauled out of the closet and inventoried.
=) Then I go look for a tree and put it up and decorate it. (Plastic trees give me a rash, so I get real trees. ) So I spread it out.
Sometimes real trees are really expensive, so that has to wait until payday occasionally. Then I leave the tree up without decorations so the cats can get used to it and I can see what parts they like to get into so I can put unbreakable ornaments in that area. Last year, Styx kept climing halfway up and then would launch herself straight out of the tree trailing ornaments.
*sigh* By the time Christmas was over, the tree was tilted just a wee bit away from where she would launch out of. Good thing it was in a corner or she might have knocked it over. Most of the undecorating happens either the first weekend after the new year or if the tree suddenly dies.
Thanks to the aforementioned cats, much of the tree is already undecorated some years. So the undecorating happens pretty fast. Mind you, as I type this, there is still a string of lights hanging from the living room ceiling and two dragon christmas ornaments also hanging from ceiling hooks.
So technically I never finished. Oops. And here's a tip for strings of lights.
Curl them up like you would a hose or an electrical cord and then tuck them into a plastic grocery bag and tie the handles together. Then they can't tangle with each other and they don't tangle much within the bag. Makes the whole lighting thing *way* easier to deal with.
After Thanksgiving I put up Christmas decorations the weekend of Thanksgiving. I used to work in retail and I disliked seeing the Christmas decorations in October. (I understood why they were up, I just didn't like it.
) Generally, I take the day after Thanksgiving off and one of those days I do it all. It's about a 2 to 3 hour process, including the tree. We don't do any outdoor decorating, just inside.
They come down the weekend after New Year's. My grandma would have a fit if she knew that I didn't leave it all up until Epiphany! .
We always do the same thing. My husband and I have both always had the Friday after Thanksgiving off, so we put all of our decorations up that day. We always take them down the day after Christmas.
At that point they've been up 3-4 weeks depending on when Thanksgiving fell, so I'm always ready to get my house back to normal then. We have a pretty organized system, so we get everything done on one day, but it does take pretty much all day and a couple of pots of coffee. We have to break with tradition this year though.
My husband started a new job in March, and this year he will have to work the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, so we'll have to do it on Sunday. It will seem strange, but we always do it all as a family, so I'd rather wait until then rather than do it with only the kids.
