Despite the recession, or perhaps because of it, the 75th annual San Mateo County Fair will feature more entertainment and the first fireworks show in several years. But with one fewer day, no Bay Meadows racing and some nearby fairs struggling, the San Mateo exposition may be a bit quieter than carnival and barnyard animal lovers have become accustomed. The fair will launch at the San Mateo County Event Center in San Mateo this Saturday, one day later than usual, and will run for nine days through Aug. 23.
The fair will be held in June starting next year. Fair organizers, which manage the Event Center on behalf of the county, said they are expanding grounds entertainment by 5 percent, are offering their first fireworks show in memory on Saturday and insist they are not skimping on attractions. Despite having one fewer day than previous years, they are hoping to top last year's attendance of 150,000.
