I thought about this over the weekend. I took my daughter to our evil Walmart to buy some personal supplies. We ended up in the shampoo aisle.
I just about fell over. I have never seen so many identical products distinguished only by the brightness and odd shapes of the packaging. Women, you know I'm right about this, you bought your 'poo because you gravitated to the package on the shelf and thought *This is such a cute bottle*.
But men, you aren't immune. How many of you stock the beer shelf in your fridge in response to the power of the brand? There is no difference in any yellow or lite beer, but I'll bet you're loyal to one for some reason other than *that brewery provides jobs in your community* (which would be a damn good reason).
Believe me, you couldn't taste beechwood in your yellow swill if your life depended on it. What say you? Asked by brewfisher 51 months ago Similar questions: product marketing gullible Business > Marketing.
Yes and no I don't easily fall for the big ticket items. Just because some celebrity is on tv hawking the latest expensive trinket doesn't draw me in. I hate parting with my money and handing it over to these large corporations.
And marketing has gotten so obvious. There is product placement in movies, videos, etc. We are oversaturated with having to run out and buy, buy, buy. Think about it - sign up and get a better cell phone, get designer glasses, get designer sunglasses, get the latest 2008 car, etc. Its too much!
But on the other hand, I love trying different shampoos, soaps, etc.I love shopping in drug stores for the latest lotions, etc. All I have to see is extra moisturizing, larger size, etc. Whatever the gimmick.... i'm a sucker for it. And yes, the evil walmart has won me over. I am now a regular shopper there.
So my answer is yes and no. Sources: opinion .
I think I'm perceptive when shopping for goods, but much less so for services - a chapter of horrors there. Having worked in various industries whose products arrive on the supermarket shelf, and observing that exactly the same stuff goes into the supermarket’s own name brand as into the posh stuff, I always go for the cheapest line on basics, buy two-for-ones whenever I can, and ’buy up’ only when I know I’m getting something distinctly better. I also refuse on principle to buy designer labels on clothes (and what on earth, pray, are ’designer spectacles?
’) and would only buy a brand name where the name actually guaranteed high quality. So I congratulate myself on not falling for that sort of fiddlesticks. Where I have fallen over, far too many times, is whan shopping for services.
I’ve paid unnecessary bagsfull of cash to gardeners who have cut down my favourite roses, charged me for time not given, and planted carefully-chosen flowers that fall over. A solicitor tried to charge me a considerable sum of money for stuff downloaded from the internet - I had the courage to tell him to stuff it. I go into a new hairdresser with a photograph of me with my favourite cut and emerge with Standard Hacking #2; and last year I paid a huge amount of money to a chap whose job was to bring my CD to market, and as first Christmas and then Valentine’s came and went and his proposed ’surges’ failed to materialise ... well, I fired him, but I’ll not get the money or the time-slots back.So if anybody wants to take on the task of marketing some CD’s of stories of intelligent adult erotica, do let me hear from you.
I would think that being a member of Askville would pass the first hurdle.
I do not now nor have I ever denied my own gullibility. I want that cereal with the tiger on the box and the cigarettes that the Marlboro Man always smoked. Don’t you dare and try to push any of that cheap store brand stuff off on me.
Give me the salt with the little girl and the umbrella, the cookies with the elf, the peanut butter that choosy mothers choose, the fish sticks with the old fisherman on the package, the bologna that has a first name, the cleaner with the scrubbing bubbles and the baked beans that Duke has the secret recipe for. Mark me down in the extremely gullible category. If you think there's no difference in Beer, any brand might be fine for you My friends and I are very picky about our beers. Sure, if you're at a party and all they have is Bud Light you drink it, but when I buy beef for myself, I'm pretty picky about which beers I like and which ones I don't. A friend of mine drinks almost exclusively mass-market American beers, and she can tell the difference between brands and light vs. non-light (we tested her to be sure).
I'm sure some people don't care about beer, just like some people don't know a Cabernet from a Merlot, or a quarter pounder with cheese from a whopper. There are a lot of people though, who appreciate the subtle differences and flavors (maybe not so much with the burgers, I admit ) and do have a preference based on flavor and quality more than brand loyalty. Many people have the same feeling with hair products.
One of my past roommates was a hair stylist, so we had a ton of different shampoos and other products around the house, and there is a definite difference in quality among products. Some have much better fragrance than others, which is important if you want to smell nice instead of like a chemical factory. Some leave your hair softer, some are more gentle if your hair is colored and you don't want to wash out the dye, some are made with all natural or organic ingredients, if that's important to you.
Of course there is a lot of branding, I won't deny that. But saying that products like beer or shampoo or toothpaste are identical apart from the label is leaving out a lot of important factors. Sure, all beers get you drunk and all shampoos clean your hair, but there area a lot of scents, flavors, and enjoyment factor getting there.
Some people don't care about the more subtle differences, but a lot of people do. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
