When was Gainesville founded?

Gainesville was officially named in 1853 though it had been inhabited for many years before that time by Native Americans. Gainesville was the site of some Indian battles during the time of taking the land from the early inhabitants and more civil war fighting happened as well. Because of union involvement in the area, "freed" men inhabited the area soon outnumbering the white people in the town.

The city grew prosperous with major citrus crops until the great freeze. Mining became the major resource until the founding of the University of Florida in 1905. Since then the university has been the source of much of the wealth of the area.
