When you find a compelling question do you read the DB before or after you take an answer slot - Always, sometimes, never. I find that generally I do not look at a DB when I find a question I wish to answer. I don't like my perspective to be colored or swayed.
Nor do I wish my enthusiasm for a question/answer to be discouraged because I may find that the DB contains something similar to what I may have to say. I will join a DB after I've answered a question. And sometimes after I've asked the question as well.
What do you think? And if you run across a comment in the DB which is similar to your answer, how do you feel? It's all in the timing sometimes.
A person can be typing out an answer in an answer slot while at the same time someone else can be posting a similar comment in the DB. I like to think of those instances as "great minds thinking alike" :-) Asked by? -Cat-?

I will only read the Discussions first if... I am baffled or unsure of the question. If I am still clueless, I will skip the question even if it looked like an interesting question to answer. Most of the questions I answer, like you, I really don’t want to read what others have written beforehand since I’d rather take a fresh run at an answer.
I prefer to finish my answer and then check other responses -- both answers and comments. Often, my ’take’ is different from the way that others have interpreted the question and I may post an additional comment to explain why I understood the question differently or what I may have left out or ignored. To be honest, I am pretty bad about quickly reading a question, deciding to answer it, and then just taking off.
This means that I find that I may be mildly (or wildly) off base with my answer. I just chalk it off to the richness of variety and let it go. Just as often, there is an amazingly similarity in the answers and comments.
I take this as validation.
I sometimes do, but most of the times I don't. I think very similar to what you said. You basically nailed it.
When asker asks a question he wants me to give MY idea on the subject. If I read the DB it will be influenced by other ideas and I might not be able to give my own opinion. Having said that, I sometimes have a look at the DB.
The reason is that sometimes there is a correction or explanation posted in the DB. If the question is ambiguous I look at the DB in hope of getting explanations from the asker. Sometimes it can clear it up.
Sometimes I need to ask a clarifying question or send a PM. The worst thing is when the question is a factual one, you look at the DB and the answer is posted! That just sucks!
You knew the answer and you wanted to answer but the answer is already there. If you answer some people might think you have cheated. If I answer and then I see there is a similar opinion in the DB that wouldn't bother me much.
However if I answer and I see there is the answer to a fact based question posted in the DB that would bother me for the reason stated above! Remember cheating in high school?! Lol!

Almost never Once you’ve taken an answer slot, it’s actually fairly difficult to even get to the Discussion Board. When you click on the question, Askville takes you to your slot. There are "back door" ways to get to the DB when you've taken an answer slot, but I almost never do that.
Occasionally my answers start out as DB comments, but when it becomes apparent that I actually do have a lot to say on something, I might switch to an answer slot and put my contribution there. In that case I’ve already read the posts that preceded mine, but usually they’re different from my thought, or I wouldn’t be adding my comment! After I submit my answer, the DB begins to appear on my Discussion list.At that point I start to follow the discussion and participate as the mood strikes.
If I see a comment that’s similar to my answer, I have two feelings. One is gratification that someone else thinks the way I do. The other is that people might think I plagiarized the other person’s thoughts.
I can’t say this happens really often, and I can’t say I’ve ever detected being penalized for it in the answer voting. So bottom line, it’s just one of those Askville things. Let’s give each other the benefit of the doubt and look at it as "Great minds think alike!

I don't I never (repeat) never ever read the discussion if I'm going to answer. I only read the discussion, if there is one, if I choose not to answer. I agree about being discouraged.
I then might not answer the question at all. Most Q I answer are usually opinionated, not all but most. Some people don't want to take up a space with an answer.
I answer if I am on an there is a spot. I usually only come on once a day and I don't have time to read the discussions till later. I usually look at them once the question is finished.
Or if someone send me a comment about a Q. So my answer is no I don't read them until after. But I hate when I misunderstand the Q altogether and then realize it by reading the discussion.
Oh well such is life. I'm sure I do it again. Now on to the discussion..
I almost always read the DB before answering. I am not sure why I do this but I read the boards first. Sometimes it helps me to validate my take on a question.
I occasionally misread a questioners intent and the DB's can help me clarify before I answer. Unfortunately more often than not reading the DB's discourages me from answering. Usually someone gives a better answer on the boards than I could possibly write so I don't bother. It also happens with questions needing a simple answer, like a name or something that someone will answer it in discussion therefore eliminating the need for anyone else to answer.
I have decided after writing the answer to this question that I am going to break this habit and try to have a little more confidence in my own ability to answer questions. Thanks for the great question!.
