When you think of "the south" (in the United States, of course), what state comes to mind first?

I think of friendly people and great food When I landed at the Jackson Mississippi airport, there "Home of the Deep South". I think Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana all share the title for representing some of the best of the south. Southern people--at least in rural areas--are friendly to all.

If you live there, you learn that they still really look out for each other. As a Yankee living in the south, I was surprised to make so many good friends so quickly. Almost 40 years later and many miles in between, I still have some good friends that live in the south.

Now, for the food. Where else is there the home grown variety that exists in the south. From Cajun to good old southern style grits and greens; the food is second to none.

I really enjoyed eating the great favorites of the south and I still fix jambalaya, greens, grits, chicken fried steak, and other dishes even though I don't live in the south any longer. Our Cajun neighbors taught us much about good food. Crawdads and dishes that were heavy in garlic and hot sauce rank high among my favorites.

I think fondly of the warm generous southern folks that fix some of the best food in the world--thanks for the memories.

Without thinking about it I would say Louisiana. I know intellectually that other states are geographically farther south with I think that Louisiana embodies my images of the south. After that comes Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

Then comes Virginia and West Virginia, then the Carolinas. I think I've forgotten a southern state somewhere. I think of Florida as more tropical than as being part of the south and I think of Texas as more western than southern.

Even though I live in Arkansas which is in the South... I tend to think of Georgia as most representative of the South. Of the original 13 colonies it was the most Southern. So it was the original south..

Alabama While technically Hawaii is the state in the US that’s farthest south, when I think of the south I think of the “Deep South” states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. I think that’s where you’ll find most evidence of the stereotypically “southern” culture. Most of Florida is farther south than the “Deep South” states, but Florida never really had that typically southern culture and is now comprised of many northern transplants.

Parts of Georgia and North Carolina, particularly the cities, would no longer be recognized as “southern. ” But in any of the rural areas of any of the states below the Mason-Dixon line, you will see rural poverty and scenes that haven’t changed much in 50 years. As a Connecticut native and recent transplant to North Carolina, it was a real eye opener the first time I saw it.
