Fishhook Barrel Cactus are typically found along desert washes, gravelly bajadas and sometimes along canyon walls. It grows in south-central Arizona and northern Sonora, Mexico. There are scattered populations of the cactus in southern New Mexico, western Texas and southern California.
It is found in all three Southwest deserts, the Mojave, the Sonora, and the Chihuahua. The Fishhook Barrel Cactus's shape helps it survive in the desert because it's vault-like water storing plant body has the greatest volume to surface ratio possible. It can store nearly 20 pounds of water in its rotund body.
