Similar questions: find cheap concert tickets.
It depends on the show and your area.... OK, I'm a cheapskate. I hate paying full price for anything. So, with concerts, it boils down to, how bad do I want to see it (how disappointed will I be if I miss out), how likely is the show to sell out (how popular is the performer), and what's it worth to me?
So, for example, I am going to see Tool in 2 weeks, and Prince in 4 weeks. Both shows I expected to be sellout or near sellout in short time. With Tool, last 2 times they came to town, tickets sold out right away...right now best available seats are next to the stage (i.e.
Limited view) and that's been about the best you could get day of the sale. Prince, well, it's his hometown show, and the only show he's doing in the US this year, so within minutes the best you could get was obstructed view, and you'd pay $200 for the privelege. So, both of these shows, I paid full price.
But for Prince there were some $31.21 tickets for those who acted fast...I managed to find a presale code and went in online right when they went on sale. So, I got two tickets for something like $93 with all fees factored it. Not cheap, but considering that you're not getting into that show for under $100 a ticket otherwise, not too bad.My seats aren't great, but they're full view...they're about as far away from the stage as can be, but they are straight back, so I should be able to see everything just fine.
Now, I could have saved "some" money on these tickets by showing up when the tickets went on sale to the box office/venue of the show. You can often avoid the Ticketmaster processing fee (which in and of itself adds quite a bit to the ticket price), but you still pay facility charges, taxes, etc.But it does save you some money, if you have the ability to wait in line at the venue for a couple hours before tickets go on sale (or with some events, think a couple days). Now, sometimes that's hard to predict, Prince is also doing a private performance at 4pm the day of his show at the downtown Macy's store, so for $250, you could have gotten there the day of the presale, and picked up one ticket to the main show, one to the private show, a T-shirt and a bottle of his new perfume.
People lined up over a day in advance, but even so, they had 1,400 to sell, and they did not sell out the first day! Kind of like when the PS3 went on sale, lines were days long, people were getting shot, etc. And not everyone got one. When the Wii went on sale, there were lines, but pretty much everyone who waited in line got one, and some people were able to go to the store the next day and just buy one. It's hard to know.
But, often the shows I want to see aren't the really big collossal names, and I know the shows won't sell out...that works in my favor. Also, if I'm willing to take the chance that it might sell out and keep my eyes peeled, I can often get into shows cheap or even free. Here's my strategy.
First thing I'm going to look for is, what local radio stations would be likely to play this artist's music (and don't forget the opening act either...who plays them). Go to that radio station's website repeatedly between the time the show is announced and the day of the show, because radio stations have tickets to give away very often, and many times, the stations have contest on their website. In fact, there was a radio station in town that I probably won 4 or 5 sets of concert tickets from in the 3 years it was on the air, basically because they didn't have as big a listener base as some other stations, but they were owned by a big conglomerate (ABC/Disney), and they had these web only contest that you didn't even have to listen to the station to win, so only a small handful of people even went to this site to sign up for the contests (I mean compared to other stations of course), so I'd sign up for anything I might want to win, and I was often pleasantly surprised. I even won one set that included a free meal before the show, a private soundcheck performance, and a meet and greet with autograph signing (Jet).
So, it's not always about being the 10th caller, but I've won that way as well. Just keep your eyes and ears peeled. Another way I've gotten into a show free was, I'm a big fan of a band called Enuff Z'Nuff that was big for about a minute at the tail end of the 80s but was kind of unfairly lumped into the hair metal scene and swept under the carpet when that genre died off, but really they're almost like a heavy metal Beatles...terrifc songwriting, brilliant pop metal...one of my all time favorites even 15 albums into their career.
Anyway, fates conspired so that even though I'd attempted to see them live on several ocassions, it never happened. But they were playing some throwback 80s show with Faster Pussycat and Pretty Boy Floyd and the venue was on the same block as where I worked at the time. So, throughout the afternoon, I went outside repeatedly and walked up and down the street where their tour bus was parked until I spotted one of the band members, shouted a hi, and he invited me on the bus, I met the band, they put me on the show list for that night, again, free show.
But those are exceptions, even if I'm going to try to find my way in free, I will also keep my eye open for cheaper tickets. Ebay can work for you here, though generally, 99% of stuff people put on Ebay is when they buy the tickets and try to make a profit (online scalping essentially) because they think good tickets will sell out and people will be forced to buy them. But it's definitely possible to find tickets to a show that didn't sell out, where someone has to sell them because they can't use them and their loss is your gain.
Probably a better source of this kind of ticket though is Craig's List. I've gotten everything from tickets someone won and just wanted a few bucks for, to tickets where the person actually went to the box office and avoided fees and now wanted just to get back what they paid. You never know who might work for the venue, or a radio station or who might be connected to the artist, and they may have extra tickets on Craig's List.
And at the same time, don't just stop at searching for tickets for sale, post your own wanted ad, CL is free after all. Keep reposting until you get a response. Go as far as to say you want these tix and wanted to get a good deal so hey, maybe if you got some tickets free, you can make a few bucks, I can save a few bucks and we're all happy.
At the door works as well, or can. I went to see Peeping Tom a couple months ago, and basically when I heard they were coming I checked the Ticketmaster site. Well, that $20 ticket was going to cost me $31.85, so I said, you know what, I'll take my chances.
I checked the radio station sites, but no one really plays them that much, so no dice there. I did find one giveaway I entered through the Onion, but I didn't win. No one posted any for sale on Craig's List, and I posted my own ads and no one responded.
Really I was just in this case looking to avoid all or most of the TM charges because I thought a 60% premium was out of line. The venue didn't have its own box office and ticketing was done through the promoter. So, I contacted the promoter day of the show, they told me they'd be selling tix at face value at the door.
I walked up 15 minutes before showtime and bought a ticket for $20. Outside the shows there are usually also radio station vans, and some are still giving away tickets...some also have little parties before the show at a nearby bar or club where they give away tickets, you can always try that. And finally, sometimes people can't make the show even though they have tickets, so they'll go to the venue before the show and try to sell them to someone on the street...not eveyrone out there is a scalper, some times you talk to these people and you might get the tickets cheaper.
But always check things like Craigslist...there was one show I really wanted to go to (Fiona Apple) that tix were just a bit too pricy for and I wasn't able to find any local stations giving them away, but in looking for tickets I found a link to a site that was giving them away as a contest, I signed up, 3 days later I got an email that I'd won tickets. Look at artists' websites and radio station websites...you never know when you'll find a special code for 1/2 price tickets...that happens some times with Ticketmaster, they have cheaper tickets and being in the know means you have the first shot at them. And of course, you could always get a job for the local security companies that provide security to these shows, or for the venue in some capacity, then you'll see everything for free.
Never done that, but if I'd been living in an area that actually had concerts when I was in college, I would have. Sources: my experience .
I would say Craigslist or.. If there is a band you want to see, if they have a website, and a forum there, people sell their tickets if they can't make it to the show. But I always look on the ticket section on Craigslist. People try to sell there tickets because they either can't make it or they upgraded, and they will ask for ticket price or best offer.
There is always Ebay- of course that is hit or miss. Sometimes you could call the club or arena they day of the show and see if they have any available seats. A lot of big places release good tickets either day of the show.
Or like for CC's that don't go through, or people that don't pick up their tickets. I really hate that tickets are getting more and more expensive and sites like Ticketmaster are charging sooooooo much in their stupid fee's. So yes, I say Craigslist is your best bet.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
